Tuesday’s article, “Thousands can stay on state’s Basic Health Plan — if they can pay,” left me feeling rather disappointed with the way the state is handling budget cuts to this program. Rather than making sure that those who need this program the most remain in the program by raising the requirements to qualify, the program has raised premium costs in an effort to get people to drop out.
This seems rather contradictory to me. Wasn’t this program designed to help those who cannot afford health care? It seems to me that the people who need this program the most will be the ones who suffer from the rise in price. True, this may be better than choosing who stays in the program through a random lottery, but surely it might be more logical to cut those who are the closest to being able to afford standard health care rather than those who are fighting just to buy groceries and pay their rent. There ought to be a better way to handle these budget cuts.
