A local David who helped slay Goliath is getting some well-deserved recognition.
Eric Christensen, the assistant general counsel for the Snohomish County PUD, will receive the James D. Donovan Individual Achievement Award in June from the American Public Power Association. Christensen was the tireless force behind the PUD’s successful effort to expose Enron Corp.’s mega-swindle of electricity customers in 2000 and 2001.
When Enron had the audacity to sue the PUD in 2003 for canceling a fraudulent contract, Christensen went to work digging through transcripts and tapes of telephone conversations between Enron traders. What emerged made national headlines – a series of smoking guns that showed epic corporate depravity. “Grandma Millie” became a symbol of the fleecing of Western ratepayers.
Christensen and others at the PUD stood up for ratepayers when federal regulators wouldn’t. We join the APPA in applauding their courage and persistence.
