In the midst of all the challenges surrounding the recent Snohomish School District strike, varied acts of kindness and sharing emerged. One such example was Christ the King Lutheran Church of Snohomish opening its doors to children and youth with no-cost daily activities provided by adult and senior youth volunteers. Daily attendance averaged about 50 participants with over 60 percent coming from the community outside the church congregation. Capable adults with knowledge and experience in curriculum development provided fun, interesting, age-appropriate activities with senior youth assisting in administering the programs.
Recent research suggests that beyond food and shelter, kids need access to three major areas for development: safe places, caring adults and productive activities. At a time when the faith community is often charged with being disconnected from “what’s happening”, this church would appear to receive an A+ in youth, family and community development.
Thanks to Christ the King for seizing the moment and helping others in their community. Hopefully, all of us, especially in the times not shaped by a strike or major tragedy, can slow down and reach out to others, especially the children and youth of our community.
