At the Aug. 24 Edmonds City Council meeting, a discussion regarding Fund 112 (transportation capital) funding sources ensued. During the audience comment portion of that agenda item there was a comment made about grant funding that needs some clarification: There was some inference that the engineering division had neglected its duty to obtain grants to be put toward city projects. I would like the citizens of Edmonds to be aware that the city’s engineering division has acquired approximately $4,875,000 in grants or low interest public works trust loans during the past three years. One of these grants was for $350,000 for the Interurban Walkway.
Darrell Smith, the city’s traffic engineer, was instrumental in helping the city obtain this grant. It is important to keep in mind that all city departments strive to do their best for the citizens of Edmonds and should be appropriately recognized for those efforts.
Therefore the above clarification was necessary to let citizens know that the engineering division, as well as all other city departments and their divisions, endeavor to seek funds as they become available to enhance City of Edmonds projects. It is also vital to remember that in order to obtain some of these monies, the city needs to have matching funds on hand, and unfortunately some of the recent voter-passed initiatives have depleted the city’s coffers to the extent that these matching funds are no longer available.
