The Saturday article regarding churches that publicly welcome homosexuals made it sound as if there are only two possible attitudes for churches to adopt. Either they affirm homosexuality as a legitimate, not sinful lifestyle, or they assume a stance in which “gays and lesbians are beaten up and made fun of,” incorrectly defined in the article as “homophobia.”
There is a third option which, in my opinion, is embraced by the majority of evangelical churches. They believe the Bible’s definition of homosexual activity as sinful, along with the Bible’s prohibition of other sinful behaviors, sexual and otherwise. While not condoning such behaviors, these churches are not “phobic,” or fearful of people engaged in such activity.
Rather, they recognize sinners of every kind as candidates for experiencing God’s forgiveness, and welcome them to join the great company of “sinners saved by grace.”
