The letter “Jaywalkers, bikes create real danger” in Wednesday’s Herald addressed a topic I had been contemplating for a couple weeks. If you’re a pedestrian or a cyclist, please wear something reflective so drivers can see you.
It is almost impossible to see a pedestrian or cyclist when it is dark and raining in the early morning or at night. When I use my car to drive to work, I have a heck of a time seeing pedestrians and bicyclists that don’t wear something reflective. I am a cyclist myself, and would never dream of riding in the dark without a reflective vest and lights.
Most bicycle shops have a Velcro reflective band that you can wear on your arm or leg for a cost of $2. Is your life worth two bucks? Personally, when I go for a walk at night I wear a reflective vest, the type that construction workers wear. Are you concerned about style? I don’t give a darn about style; I just don’t want to end up being someone’s hood ornament.
On a side note, if you’re a motorist, turn on your lights, even if it is daylight; it is so much easier to see you in the rear view mirror of my bicycle. Cyclist, pedestrian, or motorist, we all need to pay attention and work together to be safe.
