I’m sorry to say I missed the Martin Luther King day celebration and hearing the keynote speaker Sherman Alexie. Anyone who supports patriotism has something to say worth hearing because it’s about our survival.
I was glad to see in Thursday’s Herald that Alexie reminded us about King’s Christian motivation, which today’s liberalism, especially in the universities , often leaves out. Yet it was Christian ideals that inspired the white majority to end slavery, which actually violates Christian principles such as “treat other people the way you want to be treated” and “we are all created equal.”
This is what the “original” Christian taught and one should not have to be religious to appreciate these simple, logical concepts. It’s about social behavior.
Christianity itself was never about slavery and therefore owes no apology for it. Otherwise King would not have been a Christian.
I had to chuckle when I saw Alexie’s reference to “God as a Republican and Jesus as a Democrat. Can you picture this father and son in a political argument? Probably not. I expect they would be above mere politics.
