I was happy to read the recent Associated Press article regarding our Navy’s Arleigh Burke destroyers. (Jan. 3, “Navy’s Arleigh Burke destroyers break a record.”) They are truly the most impressive warships on the oceans today. However, I think the article missed a very important aspect and reason why these warships are “the envy of the world.”
These fine ships excel at all they do not only because of their amazing capabilities, but also because they are crewed by the finest, smartest and bravest sailors in the world. It is an honor to command USS SHOUP (DDG 86), but I can say that I am humbled and even more honored to have been given the opportunity to work alongside these fine Americans. They work long hours, are paid little, and sacrifice much — all because they are true patriots who love our nation and our freedom.
“Through perseverance comes Victory!”
CDR Joe Nadeau
Commanding Officer
USS SHOUP (DDG 86)
