Regarding Jeff Sax’s guest commentary on Feb. 5, “Council working with local leaders to resolve range of land-use issues”: I have some questions for Mr. Sax.
Why not charge new development more for park mitigation fees to help build ball fields for all these new people moving into our communities? Why not reserve land in the Cathcart area specifically for ball fields? It was done for the Willis Tucker Park, which won’t provide as many as needed. It was done for the school district, too.
Why not free up our county tax dollars for ball fields? Why not reserve the land and let the ball-fielders develop it and maintain it at their expense? Why not ask taxpayers if they would agree to a park tax? After all, we’ll need more ball fields for all the kids who will be moving here in the next 20 years.
It is hard to imagine that Mr. Sax’s rhetoric is believable. This council hasn’t worked with its citizens or groups such as 1000 Friends of Washington on any concern they have. They have allowed homes to go in without enough parks. They have allowed homes to go in without fixing the roads. They have allowed KRKO to build a huge radio tower farm in our only pristine river valley. They are testifying in Olympia that our farmland should be used for ball fields but also for other competing recreational uses, such as motorcycle tracks and golf courses. They say they want to protect farmland but if someone wants to use it for something else, they allow it. It appears that Mr. Sax is trying to portray himself as someone he is not because he is now up for re-election. But the fact is the majority on the council is pro-development, which includes Mr. Sax. I believe his record over the last three years speaks for itself.
