I find it deeply disturbing that Stewart O’Leary had to request overtime to replace his glasses, which were damaged in the course of his work duties for Northshore School District (“‘Put me in, coach’: Bus driver back at work after struck by metal bar,” The Herald, Feb. 14).
It seems to me that the bare minimum of thanks owed to O’Leary for his professionalism and composure under severe duress is making him whole. Calling Mr. O’Leary a hero while leaving him worse off materially than he was before the accident does him no service. Words are cheap, national exposure doesn’t pay the bills, and acts of heroism should be rewarded with meaningful support.
