The Herald’s Oct. 5 editorial gave Mary Margaret Haugen a back-handed vote of support over her Republican challenger. The Herald was “troubled by what appears to be a lack of open-mindedness on her part to a potential NASCAR race track in Marysville.” The editorial went on to say that Mary Margaret with her long experience in the Senate Transportation Committee is a “key player in deciding whether the state will encourage this promising project.” You did not like her to state opposition to the idea, without having seen specific financing proposals.
It would seem that The Herald has shown us its premature support by calling it a “promising project.” The Herald has it partially correct. Mary Margaret Haugen needs to be returned to the state Senate. I agree with what The Herald had to say in recommending her. She works well with both sides of the aisle and her transportation knowledge will be essential now and after the NASCAR proposal goes to the trash bin.
Several weeks ago, and at our invitation, Mary Margaret came to a gathering of Marysville and Arlington neighbors concerned about the track proposal. She provided voters in her district where the proposed site is located a full and candid analysis of the state’s transportation funding plans and probable NASCAR impact. She knows the majority of her district is opposed to the track, and required road improvements alone are a budget buster. To this point, she has shown more concern for her constituents and fiscal reality than have our locally elected leaders.
As for this “promising project”, let us wisely use the weeks ahead to examine the promises our county emperor and his court create to support his Roman Circus.
