This is in regard to former Gov. George Ryan commuting the sentences of all prisoners on death row in Illinois:
Many countries in the world have abolished the death penalty because they don’t want to execute their citizens. My question is, do these countries release convicted murderers back upon the street so they can kill again, like we do in the United States? This is also an execution of innocent citizens. Many murders are drug related. Do the other countries have an open border and drug problem like we do in the United States?
Since the advent of DNA testing, no one should be executed on circumstantial evidence only. What about those guilty beyond a shadow? Should they ever be released back into the public?
The death penalty is not revenge, it is for the protection of the public. Life in prison without parole will serve the same purpose if applied. It appears the sentencing and parole guidelines need to be revised.
