Immigration. Why is it such a hard issue to grasp? Illegal immigration is basic to the America way of life. It is the basis of our society. It is called supply and demand. As long as there is demand, someone will supply. Stop the demand, the supply will no longer be profitable.
The way I see it, there are just two issues: One is labor, the other is drug trafficking.
As everyone well knows, this country has been fighting the war on drugs for over 100 years and lost. The money and manpower spent on the endeavor has become a stand-alone industry. If it is changed, how many thousands of direct and indirect jobs will this impact? Economically it will be felt throughout the country.
Labor is other issue. It would be a tough choice, but the easier of the two. Stop the demand. Charge every business $5,000 for every undocumented person they hire and the demand will go away. If there are no jobs there is no reason to cross the border. This will still have a major impact of the economy. But, in the long run, it would be far less than building million-dollar fences and having National Guard troops standing shoulder to shoulder to protect us from our own indulgences.
