Skimping on kids creates ugly side

In response to the Thursday letter, “How did ugly side take over nation?”:

In his letter the writer asks, “Who has the answer to this plague?” — referring to the negative and often shocking stories carried in the media about “the ugly side of Americana.”

Firstly, there is a very good side to Americana where good, honest people do good deeds and perform good service.

Many media outlets focus on sensationalism and negativity to gain viewers and readers. This tactic helps to sell time and space to their advertisers.

I would agree this is a sad statement about the state of our society.

What may help to further the good in our society is better educating our youth and helping young people to realize the seriousness of parenting and proper education. Better education about raising children, educating those children and providing the correct environment to grow good contributing citizens.

Think about requiring a “license” to bear children, whereby potential parents are required to take several courses about proper parenting. Maybe a course given to middle school students about the responsibilities and potential pitfalls of creating children?

Perhaps we should reconsider our priorities concerning cuts in education and other social services.

Should we vote for representatives that foster such programs or those who constantly propose lower taxation, budget cuts for teachers, education programs, police departments and other social services?

We might look in the mirror to answer, “How did the ugly side take over nation?”
