Small businesses could use help, too

It was with disappointment (and some anger) that I read in the April 28 Herald that our Legislature was adding another nail to the coffin of small business. Our Legislature has provided ample tax breaks for Boeing and now is giving one to newspapers, in addition to other aerospace and timber companies.

When there is a need, I have no problem lending a hand or encouraging a business to stay in our state. However, I do have a problem when it ignores small businesses because we don’t have the clout that Big Business does. That’s called discrimination! So big businesses get a break on B&O taxes. What about small businesses? We’re definitely hurting also.

A recent article on Boeing pointed out the high unemployment rates Washington charges and one of the reasons for a poor climate for businesses in Washington. This also affects small businesses in a huge way.

I heard recently of grown men who own businesses literally crying because of their situation. Does our Legislature care? Isn’t there someone out there with the ability to create a group who will lobby for us small businesses and provide us breaks and help keep us in business?
