Snohomish mayoral race: Guzak has been a leader on housing issues

I believe Karen Guzak has been of great benefit to our town in her years of service. Snohomish looks very different than it did ten years ago. Walk down First Street on Saturday afternoon or watch the new homes going up in neighborhoods in the north end of town to see what a strong economy looks like. It takes a team to get things accomplished and Karen has been a good leader.

Some issues are especially difficult for a small city to solve— such as affordable housing. While our businesses may be prospering, and our region experiences strong growth, housing becomes scarce and expensive. As more people push north to find a home, our local housing market becomes more competitive and expensive, pushing out those people that most need our support. Increasing rent leads to increasing homelessness.

The city of Snohomish, under Guzak’s leadership, became one of the first signatures to establish the Alliance for Housing Affordability in 2013. AHA is designed to get cities and county to work together to create affordable housing for the many who need it. The goal is to provide 100 units per year, and with the persistence and “can-do” attitude of Karen as our new “strong” mayor, we may see a project on the ground very soon.

Karen brings the skill, the knowledge, the experience, and the heart to help us solve these issues in our city and continue to make Snohomish the town we love.
