With unemployment at 9.5 percent and a paucity of jobs, we are supposed to be in the Great Recession.
You wouldn’t know it the way money is being tossed around in the National Football League. For example, Sam Bradford of the St. Louis Rams inks a contract that guarantees him $50 million. Russell Okung of the Seahawks nailed $30 million guaranteed.
And there are 30 more first-rounders that became instant millionaires and none has played a down in the pros!
How did it reach this point? Where once there was common sense and reason, now hubris and avarice prevail. These players want to be the highest paid at their positions. Sports agents have fueled the fire. Today’s astronomical contracts may be tomorrow’s onset of negotiations.
Where will it end? There’s a signpost up ahead — we are about to enter the “Twilight Zone.”
