Regarding Jennifer Garnett’s Aug. 2 letter, “Theft can’t silence support for troops:” I can certainly relate to her letter. I had the same experience. One sticker that said “Freedom is not free” was removed from my car in an Albertson’s parking lot and the second one was removed at the Bellingham-to-Victoria ferry dock. At the boat dock there were so many people from the Navy and dependents of service personnel who had parked there overnight. When we returned, every car had the magnets taken. I was told that it is a game to see who can steal the most magnets. Well, I don’t call it a game, I call it theft of personal property and since my car is my personal property then so were the magnets. I felt violated as much as if they had rummaged through the trunk of my car.
If anyone sees this theft in action I hope that they will have the courage to report the incident to the local police. Today it is my magnet – who knows what they thieves will graduate to? Theft is theft. The size of the loot should not determine the difference between a prank and outright theft.
