Personally I find the current state of the newspaper business locally and nationally quite regrettable; as a private citizen I do whatever I can to support my local newspaper. I buy it. But as a taxpaying citizen it is not the responsibility of my state government to either through direct subsidies or tax credit to support a private enterprise.
My opinion is in no way intended as an insult to the hardworking men and women of the fourth estate; rather it is an acknowledgment that our precious state resources including taxes ought to be directed to what the state is required to do.
Education, law enforcement, food for the poor, transportation infrastructure; these are the things that our state government exists for, not for the care and feeding of privately owned business.
