Voting for a judge is a daunting task. The judicial canons, a code of conduct, prohibits many activities that elected public officials typically engage in that allow us (voters) to know judicial candidates better. The League of Women Voters of Snohomish County therefore does a tremendous service for our community by providing top-notch non-partisan candidate forums. The Snohomish County Superior Court Position 12 forum was another example of excellence and engagement for a judicial race. Viewers heard from both candidates on matters critical to justice in Snohomish County and I concluded that Judge Whitney Rivera should retain her seat as Superior Court Judge.
I am inspired by Judge Rivera’s 18 years as a committed public servant in Snohomish County (almost 14 years as a public defender and more than three years as an elected judge in the Edmonds Municipal Court, and now as the incumbent Superior Court judge). Judge Rivera’s demonstrated passion for the law, and our community, are evidenced by her vast experience and community volunteerism with our youth. Judge Rivera exemplifies the qualities we want in a judge: intelligence, curiosity, a calm and respectful demeanor; and a desire to serve the community and people who come before the court.
Judge Rivera is well-respected, earning endorsements by local elected officials, law enforcement and labor. Most notably, Judge Rivera is endorsed by every single sitting judge in Snohomish County and more than 100 judges statewide, including Supreme Court Justices, which clearly demonstrates the respect and trust she has earned.
Experience matters. We need to retain our respected and experienced judges. Judge Rivera has a solid grasp of the law, court rules, and the resources available to serve those who come before the court. Judge Whitney Rivera has absolutely earned my vote, too.
