Supporters help generate joy

Kudos to Madison Elementary student Kelltee Fay for her thoughtfulness while writing her Letter to the Editor. (June 4, “Students thankful for chance to go to camp.”) Kelltee thanked all who donated funds to make the Camp Orkila experience possible for all fifth-grade classes. Kelltee was very articulate and sincere. Her persuasive writing skills were outstanding. Kelltee did a great job writing and expressing herself. Her teachers also did a great job teaching her those skills.

Kudos to all who donated to help send Madison Elementary Grade 5 students to Camp Orkila. This is a tremendous opportunity for all students. Without the support of time and funds by parents, PTAs, teachers and community members, the school outdoor education camping experience would and could not happen. As elementary school principals, my husband and I have spent over 20 years going to outdoor education camps with fifth-grade students, parent volunteers and teachers. For many students camp was their first time being away from home overnight. Camp was not only about nature but a baby step to more independence and being part of a team. For parents, camp often was their first time of letting go and watching their children blossom from a new transition.

No one could explain better than Kelltee how meaningful and what a positive learning experience outdoor education camp was to her and all students. Please keep the joy and rewards of the outdoor education camp experience for students in mind for your future support.
