Jerry Cornfield’s Dec. 13 column, “Gov. Gregoire knows her budget is doomed,” reflects the stark reality on just how important it is to maintain services that help hundreds of thousands of Washingtonian residents make ends meet.
Especially in this recession-plagued environment.
Raising taxes would help close the budget hole and preserve these programs — which I know that Tim Eyman wouldn’t like one bit — and give people like me a reason to breathe easier.
But cutting the programs outright to save $900 million would have an earth-shattering effect on everyone whom are reliant on both Basic Health and General Assistance Unemployable — and create one monster headache for our politicians in Olympia in the months to come.
How much is Gregoire willing to gamble, just to see this budget of hers passed?
