Loved the Friday letter complaining about gridlock in Seattle. The writer attributed it as a direct result of Patty Murray’s campaign and the presence of Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton in Seattle. I laughed about that for hours. I lived in the San Francisco Bay area from 1993-2003. I used public transportation for most of my commuting and let me tell you there are multiple options in place. And the system extends well out into outlying areas.
Occasionally I would go to into San Francisco for a social evening and would drive my car. I could get from my home in Hayward to Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco at 5:30 p.m. on a Friday (29.29 miles) in less time than it takes most people to get through 196th in Lynnwood on a typical Friday afternoon.
Gridlock in Puget Sound is caused by shortsighted idiots who failed to create a comprehensive public transportation system decades ago when it was affordable and the public who refused to take a stand when they had a chance and continually vote in taxes for freeway expansion. I think everyone should have figured out by now that the financial window of opportunity for public transportation in Puget Sound is long gone. Say hello to gridlock on a permanent basis, no matter who is in town.
