I am excited to hear that former President Carter is visiting Cuba. I imagine he is embarking on yet another humanitarian mission – building homes for the poor, ensuring that children have access to vaccinations and clean water, or some other worthy cause. Former President Carter is an intelligent, caring and committed humanitarian, and I think that the United States could benefit from a few more people just like him.
I am sorry that letter writer Iola Rowland feels differently, and I am sorry that the writer wants Carter and my family, who are Democrats, to leave the country (“Cuba visit: Tell Carter and his friends they can stay,” Letters, May 9 ). I am sure that the writer meant for the letter to be sarcastic and funny, but in the light of Sept. 11, this sort of thinking is way out of line. The spirit of unity that has been helping the United States to heal from the deep wounds of Sept. 11 is under attack when people talk and think like this.
It is my hope that we will honor the memories of the people lost and the families destroyed in the wake of the attacks and the war on terrorism by ceasing the useless, careless, insensitive jokes about political parties and put our efforts into unifying our great nation.
