We’d like to add our voice to those expressing support for the Boeing KC-767 Advanced Tanker as the choice for the U.S. Air Force Aerial Tanker Program (guest commentary, Dec. 2). We would also like to express our appreciation to the Washington state congressional delegation for their work on the tanker issue.
Obviously, Snohomish County and Washington have a large stake in the selection of the KC-767 AT, which would be assembled in Everett. The tanker contract would support 9,000 jobs in our state, provide $400 million in economic benefits and support some 70 suppliers across the state.
The United States also has much at stake. The Boeing tanker program would support 44,000 jobs with Boeing and at least 300 suppliers in 40 states — a far greater positive impact than the rival team can promise.
You’d think it would be obvious to choose a U.S.-made plane for the tanker program. But controversy still swirls, prompted by a few states that have been promised jobs by the competing team. Let’s rally around our delegation and secure the Boeing KC-767 AT.
Deborah Knutson
President
Economic Development Council of Snohomish County
