They’ve given us reason to cheer

I would like to congratulate the Silvertips on their display of true sportsmanship and another season of great fun for my family. These young men display a love for their sport far above their highly-paid professional counterparts. With the steroid controversy in baseball, the NHL lockout and the ridiculous salaries professional athletes get paid, the sportsmanship and determination shown by the Tips far exceeds the example set by the pros.

The Tips displayed a never-give-up attitude and determination to win in both their playoff rounds and all through the season. These 16- to 20-year-olds leave their hometowns and go live with strangers in pursuit of a dream and a love for the sport. Many of them are going to high school while keeping up with the physical demands of playing hockey. Last year, with the Tips’ inaugural season, they came into a town where most people did not know the difference between a blue line and a clothesline. But their hard working ethic fits well with the people of Everett and the fans soon fell in love with their new team.

When the buzzer sounded at the end of overtime at the last game, the Everett fans cheered for their team despite the loss. Our team gave it their all. The display of appreciation by the Tips when they raised their sticks to the crowd shows that the players also appreciate the fans. The self-discipline instilled into these players by Kevin Constantine and the rest of the coaching staff is to be commended.

The building of the events center has brought new life to downtown. But even more important the Tips have given Everett something to cheer about. Something for this blue-collar, hard-working town to take pride in. The Silvertips share the same hard work ethic of Everett, and the fun of beating Seattle at something.
