Since Sept. 11, 2001, it has become increasingly common for the media to include firefighters and police officers in praise and thanks directed at veterans, particularly around Memorial Day. As a member of the local firefighting community I am appreciative of this thanks.
While it is surely an innocent and well-meaning mistake, I must take polite exception to being mentioned on Memorial Day. Civil servants do make sacrifices for their communities, but these sacrifices are in no way comparable to those made by the men and women who have fought and died in the name of freedom. The men and women who have defended this great nation deserve our full attention on Memorial Day.
To America’s veterans: Thank you, and rest assured we know the difference.
