Regarding the Oct. 13 letter, “Greene has fought crime for 35 years”:
The writer seems ready to lay every shortcoming of our law enforcement system at the feet of the Washington Legislature. I beg to differ.
We in Washington state are blessed with a Legislature that works extremely well together. Thanks to them, we have a budget surplus, a four-year college coming to Snohomish County, and one of the best auto theft laws in the country. In 2006, they gave us some of the toughest sex offender laws in the nation. I give a lot of the credit for that to Rep. John Lovick, Speaker Pro Tem of the House.
Now, as to the rise in juvenile crime in Snohomish County, whom should we blame? Well, the sheriff’s administration did eliminate the crime prevention officers. How about the recent ugly rash of neo-Nazi graffiti? Who’s at fault? Maybe Tom Greene needs to step up and take some responsibility for that. His relationship with the Minutemen and anti-gay pastor Ken Hutcherson sends an unfortunate message.
How about the department’s notorious slow response time? Should we blame the Legislature? It’s time for some responsible, strong leadership in the sheriff’s office. If you really want to prevent crime, vote for John Lovick.
