By the end of last week, the United States, under the direction of its new president, had forsaken its international allies, freezing foreign (and domestic) humanitarian programs and giving a cold shoulder to the Munich Security Conference (so that Putin and Trump could confer undeterred).
Our president is sending out a new proclamation regarding foreign affairs: Ukraine started the war with Russia, never mind the fact checking. Another Big Lie, just like his insistence that the 2020 election was stolen from him. Well, that one certainly fired up a lot of voters in his recent election bid so there’s no reason it shouldn’t work with the international community now, yes?
Will these developments help us win friends and influence people abroad? Apparently our new president doesn’t really care, as he had already said that countries should do “whatever the the hell they want to,” never mind the United Nations. And that goes for the United States of America, too. (Watch out, Panama, Greenland, and Canada! And maybe Mexico; why not?)
America first, indeed; and screw everybody else. Not that any potential ally would hesitate to share security intelligence with a leader who shows confidential communiqués (as entertainment) to private citizens during dinner parties at Mar-a-Lago.
