Trump supporters, is he acting in your interests?

In response to the April 6 guest commentary, (“What a Trump voter wants to say”), I won’t call you stupid, racist or mentally ill. But it’s a tough sell to convince anyone who’s paying attention that President Trump is a great leader who’s doing a good job, as you suggest.

I suppose we can overlook Trump’s blatant misogyny; his outspoken disdain for immigrants, refugees, Muslims and people of color; his well-documented scams to avoid paying taxes; his mistreatment of employees (including illegals he hired) and contractors working on his casinos and hotels; and his shameless, over-the-top lying about virtually every subject he discusses. Despite all that, you might believe that because he calls himself a Republican — and you “don’t believe in Democrats” — that he’s pursuing policies you consider beneficial to yourself, your family and your country.

You say you worked for the county for the bulk of your career, so I assume you’re in favor of the Republicans in this and every other state pushing a privatization agenda that would ultimately outsource the job you had to for-profit corporations, whose business model relies on part-time workers earning minimal benefits and independent contractors with zero job security — i.e., Amazon.

And, you’re proud of never asking for a handout. Good for you. But what about people with disabilities, including veterans scarred for life? Who need a hand up? What about the millions of people working hard at low-wage jobs, who can’t feed their families because they couldn’t afford to go to college, as you did, and get a decent job as a result? And as someone who worked hard all your life, are you really OK with Republicans handing over trillions in tax breaks to big business and billionaires, while working families get nothing but a few crumbs?

One last thought: It’s not just Democrats calling Trump a racist and a Nazi. It’s the avowed racists and neo-Nazis, who make no bones about their hatred of “the other,” nor their love of Donald Trump.

Please consider all that next time you vote for president.
