Donald Trump is masquerading as a Christian. It is obvious that he knows nothing about the faith, doesn’t practice the faith, and is using evangelical Christians for cynical political purposes.
Commentators say he is infusing Christianity into his campaign. He is not. He is using one variety of Christianity that, for reasons that are hard to comprehend, has bought into his MAGA movement.
I am an ordained Christian minister. Neither I nor any of my clergy colleagues I know in mainline Protestant denominations support Donald Trump in any way at all. We see him as an immoral man who advocates immoral policies. He panders to violent, racist Christian nationalists. He panders to misogynist religious leaders, and has no respect for women whatsoever.
He has no commitment to the U.S. Constitution and is a threat to American democracy. He has said that he will be a dictator for one day if he gets back in office. How many dictators have become democratic leaders after one day in power? There are a great many Christians like me who oppose Donald Trump as strongly as we can. Trump is not a Christian, and he is not a politician for all Christians by any means.
