On June 20, I returned from a fact-finding trip to Venezuela with a group called Witness For Peace. In short, we found that as imperfect as Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is (as is every leader), our mainstream media has it so wrong. We hear from Condoleezza Rice that, “Hugo Chavez is a negative force in the region.” After interviewing dozens of groups and individuals from all backgrounds, we found that the Chavez government is actually doing some amazing things, and we saw hospitals, clinics and new schools popping up all over the country. Imagine a government using its oil wealth for the people!
Furthermore, our government is using a wide variety of methods to undermine Venezuela’s very popular, democratically elected government, and trying to move Chavez into the terrorist category. Hmmmm, demonizing a country that has lots of oil — sound familiar? Have we not noticed that we have our own issues to deal with here at home? When will we learn to mind our own business?
