I am a Washington State Parent Ambassador for Head Start and ECEAP, advocating for early childhood education and care. I was pleased to read a recent article discussing investments in education and childcare, as this is an urgent issue that needs attention.
Washington state is currently facing a childcare crisis, with 63 percent of families lacking access to quality childcare services. This shortage is not only a pressing concern for parents but also a significant obstacle to the overall productivity of our workforce. In my role as an early learning advocate and volunteer leader with policy advisory committee leadership, I have listened to countless stories from parents who struggle to find and afford reliable childcare. Many families are paying more for part-time childcare than they are for their mortgage, forcing them to make impossible choices between work and their children’s care.
Businesses are impacted as well. Workers who lack access to safe, affordable childcare cannot focus fully on their jobs, leading to higher absenteeism and lower productivity. Many parents in Snohomish County and across the state are forced to cobble together temporary or inadequate solutions, putting their livelihoods at risk.
I urge everyone to contact their local and state representatives to highlight the importance of expanding access to quality childcare. This issue demands immediate attention if we want to support families, strengthen our economy, and ensure every child gets the best start in life.
