The president repeatedly uses language about people of color that stokes fear, hatred and division. His words in recent rallies about the “invasion,” and a long history of demonizing comments about Latinos, resonated with the El Paso, Texas, shooter. He used similar words in his manifesto, then drove nine hours to commit mass murder.
The president appears to believe that stirring such ugly passions provides a path to re-election, even as these comments tear at our moral fabric, our safety, and the values we try to impart to our children.
The president will only desist in his divisive fear mongering if we collectively make it clear that we demand better; and ultimately deliver this message by the voting box. If we do not speak out, we can expect more of the same, and reap the harvest as Americans. We are desperately in need of healing, and coming together to face an uncertain future.
