War on drugs has been costly, ineffective

I’m a student from Lake Stevens High School. The drug epidemic and use of drugs in our society has been a topic concerning me for a while now. I think that it is important we finally find a solution to this drug problem instead of avoiding it by beating around the bush. My main points on this issue are:

The drug war has not done anything to help drug addicts and users. By sending these people to jail instead of rehab, they are set up for failure in life. Without the detox, rehabilitation or counseling that addicts need, they will stay addicted to that drug.

Also, the drug war has cost the U.S. $1 trillion over the 45 period span of this “war.” That is about $22 billion dollars a year. This is a lot of money to be spent on one effort, especially since it has been proven a failed attempt.

Lastly, the drug war has caused a magnitude in drug violence. Since 2007, 80,000 people in Mexico have been killed in direct result of this. This means that at least 10,000 people have been killed each year from the cause. Are innocent lives really work risking for this attempt at a solution to the problem?

Pleas help spread the awareness of this growing epidemic in our society.
