In response to Kerry Watkins’ Nov. 28 letter (“Choice is foundation of American society”): Contrary to Mr. Watkins’ belief that he would never compel anyone to do what he thinks is right through legislation, he, along with everyone else who votes, is doing just that! By voting, one is attempting to compel others to live under laws that they think are best, be it liberal, conservative or otherwise.
Mr. Watkins believes that conservative Christians should not try to pass laws that reflect their beliefs. That is flawed because that would mean they cannot vote. He states that conservative Christians have no moral right to force people to behave a certain way or restrict people’s liberties. He fails to see that those who vote will force their values and beliefs on others by virtue of the laws passed or candidates elected by those who do the voting. So, it means that he is saying that conservative Christians cannot vote because that would force others to live under their values and laws.
So if he really believes in free choice as the foundation of liberty and democracy, he should not be asking conservative Christians to relinquish their values or their choice to vote for who they want to.
I believe it is each American’s right and obligation to vote for the common welfare of this land’s inhabitants, those born and unborn.
True, Jesus never tried to get laws passed, then again Jesus never had the ability to vote. Rome saw to that! But God will judge us according to the choices we make in this life. Are we to choose to not vote and let others’ votes force us to live on their possibly life-debilitating and life-destroying laws? Of course not!
Choose life and vote whenever possible!
