I am writing concerning the recent fatal attacks in the Atlanta courthouse and the local questions that such a story can raise. Having very recently left office after 12 years on the Snohomish County Superior Court bench, and having served before that in the county prosecutor’s office, I want to assure the general public that my experience indicates that the local security program is quite sound.
Under the solid leadership of Snohomish County Superior Court Presiding Judge Thomas Wynne, and with a County Council which has steadfastly shown its commitment to public safety issues, the local judges and the jail leadership will meet and review current procedures. If some minor changes or improvements are in order they will be made immediately.
In my many years of experience, I have always been greatly impressed by the sensible and prudent efficiency of the county jail transport teams and the local courthouse marshals. Their vigilance and professionalism may well serve as a model for courthouses around the country.
I simply believe that it is of vital importance that the citizens of our community know and believe that their courthouse is safe and that the dedicated officers serving them are of the highest caliber.
