We shouldn’t have to choose between them

Regarding the March 8 article, “Road needs put squeeze on new trails”:

It’s unfortunate we must choose between roads or trails. Making Snohomish County a bike and pedestrian friendly place requires all our efforts, especially our county government. Bike and pedestrian trails are a growing part of our transportation web, providing an alternative to the ubiquitous automobile. In addition to recreational benefits, they can provide a commute route for cyclists and safe paths for pedestrians.

The Interurban trail will eventually link Everett with Seattle, with the cooperation of several cities along the route. The overpass at 124th Street is critical because it will provide a safe route to reconnect with the trail south of 128th Street. Today, a pedestrian or cyclist must run the gauntlet of exit/enter ramps for I-5 on the north side, then cross 128th north to south to continue on the trail near the drive-in theater. Many Mariner High School students use this route when going to and from school. The overpass project could be completed this year. If we have to choose among bike and pedestrian projects due to insufficient funding, the overpass is the most critical. Please urge your council person to support this, and other important projects, which link our county trail system.
