What is the purpose of torture? According to FBI interrogators, information gained under torture is neither reliable nor relevant.
Putting morality aside (a risky proposition), what is to be gained?
From my research into the matter, it seems that countries have engaged in torture with two main goals: to terrorize the enemy population, or to gain false confessions that could be used for propaganda purposes.
So which was it for the United States?
