Second Amendment
What other rights willing to forfeit
Constantly barraged with calls from the left for “gun control,” it’s important that a look is taken at the Declaration of Independence and Constitution for background.
The Declaration of Independence states “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights…” By extension, “Creator” here means that they are God-given rights. When the U.S. Constitution was created, these God-given rights were codified in Amendments 1-10, The Bill of Rights. Those rights are:
Freedom of speech; Freedom of religion; Freedom of the press; Freedom to peaceably assemble; Right to own firearms; Right to not have soldiers quartered in private homes; Right to Privacy; Right to face your accuser; Freedom from self-incrimination; Right to a fair and speedy trial; Right to a trial by jury; Freedom from excessive bail; Rights not specifically identified are not excluded; Powers not delegated to the U.S. or Constitution belong to the States, unless prohibited.
In terms of Constitutional protection, all of the above are equal under the law.
With the above in mind, I assume that anyone who wants to restrict lawful firearms ownership must also be willing to give up their freedom of speech, religion, a fair trial, etc., (i.e., all the rights identified above) which are on an equal legal footing with firearm ownership. However, none who would restrict lawful gun ownership have yet offered to limit their existing Constitutional rights. Hmmm.
