One sometimes hears the question, Why do we wage war to oppose violence? Similarly, at times another question is posed: Why do we kill (death penalty) to oppose murder? I have another question: Why do we practice discrimination to oppose sexism? Consider the following:
We require only males to register for the draft even though all females could do one job or another in the military. We have lowered the physical standards for firefighters so more females could qualify, but I know of no job where the standards were lowered so more males could qualify. While affirmative action has given way to “hiring goals,” there are no apparent hiring goals or outreach efforts to get more males into female dominated jobs.
We strictly enforce child support payments (violation committed usually by a male) but do not put forth any governmental enforcement action to enforce child visitation rights (violation committed usually by a female). Support and services of every kind imaginable is available (many on a 24-hour basis) for female victims of domestic violence. Not so for male victims, even though federal government statistics show that 30 percent of all victims of domestic violence are male.
Genital mutilation was outlawed only for females. The sponsor of this legislation specifically rejected giving the same protection to males.
