Regarding the Sept. 17 article, “County’s disaster headquarters are small, old and vulnerable”:
Snohomish County needs a new disaster management center, that I can fully agree on. But $20 million for a building they want to last 30 years? Seems to me we could get a sturdier building for the money.
My former house was built for less than $10,000 and we lived there for 34 years, and it is still a sturdy house. We’ve had two pretty hard earthquakes and several high-velocity windstorms over those years, and it withstood them without any damage. It just seems a multi-million dollar building should be expected to last more than 30 years, hold up under disaster conditions and be a shelter in emergencies. I think in their “studies” they should plan for an emergency shelter for the disaster center.
