he trend toward severely restricted pursuit policies, signal surrender to the criminal. Proponents would have you believe that we have no other choice. Of course, we have a choice. Instead of surrendering, make the consequences of eluding police match its felonious transgression against public safety.
Police do not pursue drivers for minor traffic offenses; only the ignorant believe that. Police pursue criminals who have made the major leap to choosing not to pull over and instead to drive a two-ton vehicle, with cruel disregard for innocent drivers and pedestrians in the area, in an attempt to elude police.
This is indicative of politically left-leaning governments who do not respect the police officer. Assaulting an on-duty police officer is a felony, however prosecutors routinely fail to charge this crime as a felony, unless the circumstances would make it a felony in any case.
This same disrespect is now extending to no consequences for failing to yield to an officer’s authority in a patrol car. If I, as an agent for public order, can be assaulted without significant consequences, and criminals may drive away from me, so long as they do it recklessly, I have to ask why should anyone other than a good citizen, have any respect for what authority I have left?
