A recent Herald story (“Man charged in Everett shooting that left man paralyzed,” The Herald, Nov. 30) details the circumstances of a shooting in south Everett last September. In October, the alleged perpetrator was arrested for stolen license plates, then released a day later. In November he was finally arrested for the shooting and charged with multiple felonies. The article also says the man “had over 40 outstanding warrants for his arrest in Washington, including 14 this year,” and “has about a dozen felony convictions in Snohomish, King and Lewis counties dating back to 1995.”
Why wasn’t he picked up before the shooting on any of those outstanding warrants? The result of that not happening is yet another victim. Don’t you think when he was picked up for the stolen license plates that background research should have been performed, which would have shown that he is a repeat violent offender with open warrants, and subsequently held in jail instead of going free for another month to possibly do more harm?
I know the police are overworked and stretched pretty thin, but Mayor Cassie Franklin and Police Chief Dan Templeman, you can spend lots of effort and money to hire social workers to help the homeless problem, but what’s your plan for violent repeat criminals like this person?
