Regarding the article, “Report: Coal-train dust data too sparse”: I’ve been reading all the doom and gloom stories about the coal trains for months now, and I wonder why a simple solution hasn’t been discussed. I’m referring to covering the load. Trucks on our highways have to cover yard waste, gravel, and grain in the mid west. I’m sure if the cars were covered with a heavy tarp and secured properly, most of the dust would stay in the car and not blow around. I remember reading once where the coal could also be sprayed to keep down dust. A combination of these two remedies should do an adequate job of dust control, unless the goal is merely to stop the trains.
