Two-time Olympian Scott Macartney has decided to retire from ski racing after a 12-year career with the national team.
The 32-year-old of Crystal Mountain says hip, knee and head injuries over the past few seasons were simply his body’s way of “telling me it was time.”
Macartney, a speed specialist, started 98 World Cup races in his career and had two podium finishes.
But he may be best known for his horrific crash in Kitzbuehel, Austria, two years ago. He lost control at nearly 90 mph and smacked his head on the ground, his unconscious body sliding toward the finish line.
Macartney didn’t make the squad for the Vancouver Games last month. His best Olympic finish was seventh in the super-G in 2006.
