2018 State Golf Preview: 10 Things to Watch

Kamiak is a favorite for boys and girls team titles, and several locals could contend for individual titles.

Alvin Kwak, Kamiak: Kwak, a junior, won his second consecutive 4A Northwest District tournament title after shooting a 4-under-par 140 and beating teammate Devin Kim in a playoff. Kwak tied for 10th in the 4A state tournament last year and tied for ninth as a freshman.

Devin Kim, Kamiak: Kim, a junior, took second place in the 4A Northwest District tournament after shooting a 4-under-par 140 and losing to teammate Alvin Kwak in a playoff. Kim tied for fifth place in the 4A state tournament last year and tied for 26th as a freshman.

Jane Kim, Kamiak: Kim, a junior, took second place in the 4A Northwest District tournament with a two-round total of 155. She placed second in the 4A state tournament last year and tied for 17th as a freshman.

Haley Wong, Shorewood: Wong, a sophomore, won the 3A Northwest District tournament with a two-round 154. She tied for 22nd in the 3A state tournament last year.

Grayson Giboney, King’s: Giboney, a junior, is making his third state appearance. He tied for seventh place in the 1A state tournament last year and placed 14th as a freshman.

Kolby Heggenes, South Whidbey: Heggenes, a senior, earned runner-up state finishes each of the past two years and tied for 13th place as a freshman. She led the Falcons to the 1A/2B/1B state team title last year and contributed to second-place team trophies in 2015 and 2016.

Kamiak boys: Led by juniors Alvin Kwak and Devin Kim, the Knights qualified five golfers for the 4A state tournament. The standout duo led Kamiak to a third-place team trophy last year, which was the Knights’ ninth top-10 state finish in the past 14 seasons.

Kamiak girls: Led by junior Jane Kim and senior Annette Vo, the Knights are sending five golfers to the 4A state tournament. Kim and Vo led Kamiak to a third-place team trophy last year, which was the Knights’ 11th top-five state finish in the past 15 seasons.

Everett boys: The youth-laden Seagulls qualified five golfers for the 3A state tournament. Everett is led by sophomore Josef Koznek, who won his second consecutive 3A Northwest District tournament with a 2-over-par 148. Junior Andrew Olson and sophomore Austin Duffy tied for third in district.

Edmonds-Woodway girls: The Warriors qualified four golfers for the 3A state tournament. Edmonds-Woodway is led by senior Frances Monahan, who tied for third place in the 3A Northwest District tournament.
