27 turnovers doom Everett vs. Squalicum

BELLINGHAM — Everett scored the first four points of the game Tuesday night at Squalicum. Then things went downhill.

Squalicum outscored Everett 18-4 in the first quarter and 21-5 in the second quarter for a big early lead and, ultimately, a 64-42 non-conference victory.

“Both teams pressed a lot, right at the half court line … They got their hands on a lot of balls,” Everett head coach Aaron Nations said. “We made bad decisions and gave up easy transition buckets in the first half.”

In the first quarter, Squalicum forced four straight Everett turnovers to turn a 0-4 deficit into a 10-4 advantage. Everett finished with 27 turnovers, 17 of which came in the first half.

“We played much better in the second half,” Nations said. “We played a bit smarter.”

Squalicum’s Nick Stackhouse finished with 21 points. Flynn Mattson scored 15 points to pace Everett, and Rendel Jones chipped in three points and six rebounds.

“Being down thirty at half, we challenged them to come out and play hard and they did,” Nations said.

Stackhouse scored 17 of his points in the first half.
