When I covered the 2010 East-West All-Star Football Game Saturday, I noticed that all the previous scores in the annual gridiron series were printed in the game program. I didn’t include anything about this in the post-game notebook, so let’s look at the game’s history now.

The game went through quite a few incarnations over the past 63 years. In 1947 the matchup was State versus Seattle. Three years later it became State vs. Tri-City, which continued through 1954. (The ‘53 and ‘54 games both ended in ties.) The East-West format debuted in 1955, when the West team edged the East team 7-0. But after the 1959 game, which the West won 14-7, the series ended for 19 years.

When it resumed in 1978, the series pitted the North versus the South for two years; the first matchup was a 2-0 North team victory, by far the lowest-scoring battle in series history. In 1980 the East-West moniker was restored and the West squad celebrated a 13-7 triumph.

It’s been known as the East-West Game ever since, although the method used for distributing players to each team has changed and currently it’s more of a Northwest vs. State format than East-West.

Following its thoroughly one-sided 28-9 triumph Saturday, the East team has a three-game win streak in the series. But among the 36 games in the series that used the East-West label, the West team has 20 victories, four more than the East team.

Here is a list of all the game scores in the history of the series (according to the game program) from 1947 through 2010.
