EVERETT — In a pitchers’ duel between a current Everett AquaSox standout and a former one, it was Adam Macko and the Vancouver Canadians that came away with a 3-0 win to open the Northwest League championship series on Tuesday night at Funko Field.
Macko, a seventh-round pick by the Seattle Mariners in 2019 who was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays organization in a deal that netted the Mariners Teoscar Hernandez, didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning and finished with five strong innings to earn the win for the Canadians.
Reid VanScoter was almost as good for the AquaSox, finishing with just two runs allowed on four hits in six quality innings. VanScoter struck out four and walked just one.
Vancouver got a run-scoring double from Ryan McCarty in the second, another from Jommer Hernandez in the fifth and an RBI groundout from Dasan Brown in the seventh for all the runs it needed.
Everett’s offense was limited to just five singles in the game, two coming from Cole Young, and one each from Harry Ford, Josh Hood and Blake Rambusch.
Game 2 of the best-of-five series takes place Wednesday at Funko Field in Everet with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
